Russ Juskalian is a freelance editorial photographer, based in Munich, Germany, specializing in feature, adventure, travel, and culture stories.
Russ has shot assignments for The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, The Boston Globe, MIT Technology Review, and many other publications, websites, and outfits. In pursuing these stories, he has reported from 35 countries on 4 continents — and photographed in a handful of conflict areas and disputed territories.
Whether in Nagorno-Karabakh — a breakaway region behind Armenian and Azerbaijani troops on simmering front lines — or atop 14,000-ft, snow-covered peaks in Indian-controlled Kashmir, or on a makeshift pump-trolley careering down rusted out rail lines in the middle of the Cambodian hinterland, Russ's photography tends towards the day-to-day lives of the folks not making the news (or policy decisions) and the places they live. He is passionate about ordinary people, extraordinary contexts, and extreme landscapes and natural phenomena.
A native of Amherst, Massachusetts, Russ is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where he studied physics, cinema, and journalism; and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. When not at work, he's often in the backcountry of Austria skiing, cycling around Bavaria in search of the perfect biergarten, or punctuating his weeks with bouldering sessions — usually with a camera strapped to his head, body, or equipment.
